Proof of Payment

Satisfaction of Judgment
A Satisfaction of Judgment must be recorded in the County Clerk's Office for a docketed judgment whenever full payment has been made. After the Court records the Satisfaction of Judgment, the taxpayer may request a copy of the Certificate of Disposition from the County Clerk's Office.

A Satisfaction of Judgment is the process by which Finance formally notifies the County Clerk's Office (and the court) that a previously filed warrant has been fully paid. The Satisfaction requests that the Clerk "discharge the warrant," that is, to dismiss or close it because the debt has been paid.

Certificates of Disposition
A Certificate of Disposition is the legal equivalent of a Satisfaction of Judgment. However, it is created by the County Clerk's Office after Finance submits the request for a Satisfaction of Judgment. It is certified and has a raised seal, which is sometimes required in legal and financial transactions.

Once the debt is paid in full, the taxpayer can obtain a Certificate of Disposition by requesting one from the County Clerk's Office in the county where the business is located.

Interim Letters of Satisfaction
If a taxpayer has an urgent financial or legal transaction (such as a mortgage closing or a pending bank loan) and has fully paid a docketed warrant that was not previously satisfied, the taxpayer can request an Interim Letter of Satisfaction. This Letter, written on Finance letterhead, states that the taxpayer has paid the debt in full and that it is Finance's intent to satisfy the judgment. It will serve as proof of full payment until such time that the taxpayer can obtain a Certificate of Disposition from the County Clerk's Office.

Contact Us
If a taxpayer is unable to ascertain if a satisfaction has been issued for a fully paid judgment, the taxpayer may contact the Collections Division's Receipt and Control Unit for verification and / or resolution.
