Reminder About Illegal Wall and
Scaffold Advertising Signs

While wall and scaffold signs are permitted in some areas of the City they must comply with applicable zoning and building code regulations.

The new Outdoor Advertising Registration Program has given the Department additional enforcement tools including the ability to hold property owners accountable as outdoor advertising companies and to levy penalties of $10,000 to $25,000 against those who fail to comply.

What you need to know about:

The Sign Enforcement Unit is charged with implementing  Local Law 14/2001 ("LL14") (41 kb) regulating outdoor signage throughout New York City. LL 14 was enacted by the City Council to reduce the proliferation of illegal signage and better regulate existing and new legal signs. Particular attention is focused on signage in and around public parks and highways where visual clutter has significantly increased, causing unsightly and in many cases, unsafe situations. LL 14 has recently been amended by  Local Law 31/2005 ("LL 31") (30 kb).
