How to Become a Voluntary Religious Service Provider in Detention

The New York City Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) establishes linkages with religious organizations who are intersted in delivering services to youth in detention. The agency seeks a broad spectrum of providers who would be able to service the wide range of religious needs of the youth in detention. Providers who are interested in offering their free services should contact the Director Program Services at (212) 442-7268 or via e-mail at nycdjj@djj.nyc.gov. The Director Program Service will meet with interested organizations to determine how to best match their services with the structure of DJJ and explain the process of clearing the organization to work in detention.

Questions asked of the applicant during the interview include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • A description of the proposed service (i.e. worship, bible study, musical, etc.)
  • The name and telephone number of a contact person
  • The proposed day of the week, time of day, and facility location for the service
  • A list of the names of individuals, no more than ten (10), who will conduct the service
  • The spiritual principles and the mission of the religious organization
  • A list of references
