Get Help with Home Heating Costs this Winter
HEAP is a free, federally-funded seasonal program that helps eligible households with grants to pay for regular and emergency energy heating costs, equipment and repairs. HEAP benefits are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

The City's First Innovative Senior Centers (ISCs) Open Their Doors
Eight community-based service providers have been selected to develop the City's first Innovative Senior Centers. These centers will open in January and will provide enhanced programming beyond the scope of existing centers. Selection of the centers is the latest achievement of the City's Age Friendly NYC Initiative. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Linda I. Gibbs and Department for the Aging Commissioner Lilliam Barrios-Paoli made the announcement October 19th.

New Fall Prevention Initiatives Unveiled By Coalition of City and Community Partners
On September 23, in recognition of Falls Prevention Awareness Day, New York City officials and community partners announced new initiatives to reduce the incidence of falls among older New Yorkers by educating seniors, caregivers and practitioners about fall risks and ways to mitigate the risks. Among the new initiatives is a new website devoted to falls prevention awareness and offering targeted information to seniors, caregivers and professionals. In addition, a broad coalition of government, academic institutions and not-for-profit agencies spanning the aging, health, vision and disability communities will be promoting falls prevention awareness activities within their respective membership communities.

Mayor Bloomberg, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and New York Academy of Medicine President Jo Ivey Boufford, MD today outlined 59 initiatives aimed at making New York a more livable City for its growing senior population. The initiatives in Age-Friendly NYC: Enhancing Our City’s Livability for Older New Yorkers focus on four areas: community and civic participation; housing; public spaces and transportation; and health and social services.
