Municipal Water Efficiency Program

Municipal Water Efficiency Program
We are investing in water conservation measures to make our public buildings more efficient. By retrofitting plumbing fixtures in city schools, parks, playgrounds, firehouses, and universities, the Municipal Water Efficiency Program aims to generate an estimated water savings of more than 9 million gallons of water per day.

On-Site Water Reuse Grant Pilot Program
The On-Site Water Reuse Grant Program is a cost sharing program that provides incentive for commercial, mixed-use, and multi-family residential sectors to install water reuse systems by covering a portion of efficiency technology capital costs. Grants for water reuse systems are available at the individual building and district level.

We have prioritized optimization of the city’s water distribution network by expanding our leak detection program, launching a service line protection program, pursuing full build-out of water meter and Automated Meter Reading technology, replacing large water meters on industry recommended cycles, and monitoring system pressure zones.

Water Supply Shortage Management

Water Supply Shortage Management
Over the past 75 years, New York City has experienced nine drought periods of record. The city’s existing drought rules only account for water shortages created by natural, hydrologic conditions measured by reservoir levels, and do not address water shortage conditions attributed to planned or unplanned outages of water supply infrastructure. These Rules will now include provisions to address water shortage conditions due to scheduled shutdowns and infrastructure repairs that would potentially cause temporary service interruptions.

Wholesale Customers Water Demand Management Program
We are working with our largest upstate wholesale water customers to develop conservation plans aimed at saving water and money. We will work collaboratively with upstate customers to identify demand management strategies with a goal of reducing their water use by 5 percent.

The mission of the EPA WaterSense Program is to protect the future of our nation’s water supply by promoting and enhancing the market for water-efficient products and services. EPA’s ‘Shower Better’ campaign promotes use of WaterSense labeled shower heads that can save up to 30 gallons of water per household per day.
