DEP Completes Nitrogen Reduction Facility at 26th Ward Wastewater Treatment PlantEnvironmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland today announced that DEP completed construction of a carbon addition facility at the 26th Ward Wastewater Treatment Plant that will reduce the amount of nitrogen discharged into Jamaica Bay by more than 3,000 pounds per day, or nearly 10% of total nitrogen discharges to the bay. As part of a historic agreement announced by Mayor Bloomberg, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmental stakeholders in 2010, the nearly $2 million facility is part of $115 million in total new investments committed to reducing nitrogen discharges into Jamaica Bay by more than 50% over 10 years. DEP Completes Upgrade of Connections to New Croton Aqueduct for Three Westchester Communities Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland today announced the upgrade of existing connections to the New Croton Aqueduct for the Villages of Briarcliff Manor, Tarrytown, and Sleepy Hollow. The New Croton Aqueduct serves as a backup water supply for these villages and the rehabilitation of the shafts and repairs to the pumps increase the reliability in their backup system, particularly with any construction-related or other shutdowns to their primary water source, the Catskill Aqueduct. DEP Completes Microfiltration Expansion Project in Upstate Wastewater Treatment Plant in Margaretville Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland today announced the completion of a $7.4 million project to upgrade a City-owned wastewater treatment plant at Margaretville in Delaware County. DEP Installs Two Inflatable Dams in Brooklyn to Help Improve New York Harbor Water Quality Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland today announced the completion of a $15.7 million project to reduce pollution by installing two inflatable dams within existing large sewer lines that will temporarily store a mix of stormwater and wastewater that might otherwise be discharged as combined sewer overflow, or CSO, into New York Harbor.
