Advance at Work (Career Advancement Program)

Advance at Work provides free, professional, personalized services to help working individuals earn more, get promotions, and access benefits.  Customers and their career coaches plan for long-term career advancement and higher paying positions in healthcare, retail, security, and other high-growth occupations.

Program Description
Through Advance at Work, New York City's Department of Small Business Services (SBS) innovative career advancement program, working New Yorkers receive intensive year-long services designed to help them increase their income or grow in new careers. Currently available in five of the City's seven Workforce1 Career Centers, funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) will allow the SBS to expand the program into all five boroughs in 2010.

Launched in July 2007 as an anti-poverty initiative, in its first two years Advance at Work helped 938 low-income New Yorkers achieve new jobs in growing industries, or advance with their current employers. In the first quarter of its third year (July 1, 2009-September 30, 2009), Advance at Work enrolled 450 new customers. the program currently serves 2,041 customers in five locations – in the most recent quarter, 238 of these achieved new jobs, or promotions with their current employers (104% of our target) – 141 were placements, and 97 were promotions.

Eligibility:at Work helps employed New Yorkers who:

  • Make less than $14 an hour or $560 a week
  • Have been working for more than 6 months
  • Receive NO public cash assistance
  • Can take time to meet regularly for a year with a professional career coach and to engage in job-related training, research, and networking over several months
  • Are committed to taking steps to advance in their career
