Mayor Bloomberg Highlights Free and Low-Cost Holiday Events

Inspired by New York City's Just Ask the Locals campaign, Mayor Bloomberg recently outlined dozens of ongoing free and low-cost, family-friendly cultural activities. New York City's museums, parks, theaters, public libraries, recreation centers, Business Improvement Districts, and other venues offer many attractions, including special holiday events, with a free or suggested admission cost.

Mayor Bloomberg and Bette Midler planted tree 111,111 at the one year anniversary of MillionTreesNYC, a ten-year initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout the five boroughs. The MillionTreesNYC anniversary was celebrated by the launch of several community-based programs and events, including the CEO's MillionTrees Training Program, conducted in partnership with New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation.

CEO CEO Releases Report on Alternative to the Federal Poverty Measure
July 18, 2008
This working paper explains how the CEO measure, which is based on recommendations made by the National Academy of Sciences, was constructed. The paper also discusses the new measure's impact on New York City's poverty rate. New York City is the first local government in the nation to reformulate the widely criticized 40-year old poverty measure. Federal legislation proposing changes to the official measure were subsequently introduced by Rep. McDermott (D-WA) and Sen. Dodd
(D-CT).

On December 27, Mayor Bloomberg announced that the Center for Economic Opportunity successfully implemented 31 new anti-poverty programs since being created in 2006. In addition, CEO released its first Strategy and Implementation Report, which provides an overview of strategy and details each new program. Mayor Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Gibbs, and Executive Director Veronica White were joined at the announcement by participants of DYCD's Young Adult Internship Program, one of CEO's newly launched initiatives.

The program fills two needs: it creates a career ladder program in a growth industry, and it provides healthcare facilities with nurses who are currently in short supply.

Mayor Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Gibbs, and Small Business Services Commissioner Walsh announced that the Center for Economic Opportunity has increased support for NYC Business Solutions Training Funds. This innovative program will provide funding directly to businesses that commit to job creation, promotion, and training. Currently, $1 million is available that small businesses can apply for before October 15.

On August 28, Mayor Bloomberg delivered an address on poverty at an event hosted by Brookings at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Mayor Bloomberg described anti-poverty efforts in New York City, including the innovative work of the Center for Economic Opportunity and Opportunity NYC, the nation's first conditional cash transfer initiative. During his address, the Mayor proposed substantial expansion and reform of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and discussed the shortcomings of the federal poverty measure.
